A cycle route that was due to stretch between the east and west coasts of Ireland has been put on hold after opposition from landowners.
The national cycleway would connect Dublin and Galway, heading through Mullingar, Athlone and Loughrea. The western section, between Galway and Ballinasloe, met with objections from farmers including loss of land, disease control and security. The eastern section of the route, which runs mostly along towpaths and a former railway line, will go ahead as planned and should be completed by 2017. Read more: independent.ie
