Author Arundhati Roy, who won the Booker Prize for her novel The God of Small Things, has announced that she will return her National Award from the Indian government to protest rising intolerance and inter-communal violence in the country.

Recent years have seen a surge in religiously motivated attacks, which have further strained relations between Hindus, Muslims and other religious groups in the world’s second most populous country. Although officially secular, the government has been seen to be taking an increasingly pro-Hindu stance, and attacks on religious minorities and low-caste Hindus are becoming increasingly common.
