The government of the Indian state of Haryana is using ancient survey reports produced in the Mughal era in its quest to find the route of the holy Saraswati River, the third sacred river of Hinduism alongside the Ganges and the Yamuna.
The 16th-century reports are said to provide the most compelling evidence for the existence of the river, which is said to have disappeared below the surface thousands of years ago.
