The home office in India has banned the transport of live animals to Nepal in a bid to check the slaughter of livestock for the Gadhimai festival. Every year more than 250,000 goats, chickens, doves and buffalo are killed at the Barayapur temple in the world’s largest mass animal sacrifice, attended by five million Hindu devotees.
