A new program from Sheraton that allows guests to skip housekeeping in exchange for a $5 voucher in order to ‘conserve water, energy and other resources’ is drawing ire from hotel workers who say the program creates more work and fewer hours. In Toronto, 200 protesters converged outside the Sheraton Centre downtown to bring attention to the issue. According to a spokesperson from Starwood Canada, which owns Sheraton properties, the Green Choice program is popular, with nearly a million guests participating each year. Sheraton’s website says that one guest can save 596 cups of water and enough natural gas to heat a hotel room for several hours by participating in the program for just one night. A spokesperson for the union, however, says that the program causes an unsustainable workload for hospitality workers, since the rooms can go without cleaning for several days. Read more: thestar.com
