A new high-speed railway connecting western China with the rest of the country will begin operation by the end of the month. The railway will link the city of Lanzhou in Gansu province to Urumqi in far west Xinjiang province, travelling via Xining in Qinghai province. Starting at the end of November, the train will travel at 200 kilometres per hour between Urumqi and Hami, reducing the journey time from five hours to three. By the year’s end, the entire 1770-kilometre line will be complete, taking the record as the world’s longest high-speed railway track. Read more: shanghaiist.com
