New Zealand is taking stock after the heaviest snowfall in many years on the South Island this week. Three trampers had to be airlifted out of the mid-Canterbury foothills after activating their emergency beacon; snow-laden power lines cut electricity to around 5000 rural homes; and roads north and south of Lake Tekapo were closed leaving many motorists stranded overnight.
