Addu Atoll in the south of the Maldives has been hit by severe flooding after 12 hours of torrential rainfall. Homes and businesses in Addu City have been inundated by floodwaters and the storm damage has been described as the worst in 40 years.

Fears are now growing about water contamination as sewers are overflowing and the atoll is running out of chlorine for water purification. Addu Atoll is home to a number of upscale resorts that are popular with divers and honeymooners. The Maldives are not the only country in the region to be hit by severe weather recently many districts in Chennai remain underwater after weeks of heavy rainfall along the east coast of India.
