Holocaust survivors' organisations have expressed outrage at Google's decision to use the sites of Nazi concentration camps in an 'augmented reality' video game, calling it a 'desecration'.

In the game 'Ingress', players visit locations in the real world to find portals (points on a map visible through a smartphone) to gain control of portions of land from other players. Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, near Berlin, had 70 of these portals at one point, while Dachau, Buchenwald and Neuengamme were also included. Google has now removed them from the more well-known sites, but those at Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial & Museum still remain. A spokesperson from Google said, 'These special portals are of significant historical value and they were established by players for that reason.'
