A sinkhole the size of a football field opened up on North Stradbroke Island, just off the coast of Queensland near Brisbane on Wednesday.

Swimmers have been warned to stay away from the sinkhole at Jumpinpin Beach which is on the north of the island, as it is not patrolled by surf lifesavers.

A spokesperson from Surf Lifesaving Australia explained, “There are really strong currents in the water and the sand is quite unstable”. The stretch is popular with fishermen and four-wheel-drive enthusiasts. In September this year, a sinkhole swallowed a caravan at Rainbow Beach, a little further north on the mainland.
