The German island of Juist, off the country's North Sea coast, is set to harness its most abundant natural resource to solve the problem of insufficient street lighting.

Designer Peer Langemak, based in Schleswig-Holstein, has created the world's first street lamp powered solely by wind power, ideal for blustery Juist, which has too little sunlight to rely on a solar powered version. Because the lamps don’t require any cabling, they are particularly useful for rural areas; the innovative LED lights will run on rechargeable batteries which can be fully charged from just half a day in a moderate breeze, and can provide enough power to last for up to ten days.
