Germany's minister for food and agriculture, Christian Schmidt, has responded to this week's announcement from the World Health Organisation that processed meats cause cancer by saying, 'No one should be afraid when eating a bratwurst.'

Following a review of over 800 studies, WHO warned that there is now sufficient evidence that processed meats such as sausages and ham increase the risk of colorectal cancer. But in a statement Schmidt said, 'What counts is the quantity: too much of something is always bad for health.'
