An artist is to fill London’s Covent Garden with 100,000 balloons. The balloons will be illuminated with pulses of light for the Heartbeat installation, the first artist Charles Pétillon has created outside France.

It will take a team of 25 people five nights to inflate the individually sized balloons, which weigh a total of 320 kilos, before the sculpture is installed. ’I have never done anything on this scale so it has been quite daunting,’ said Pétillon. ‘Because it is such a historic place, we had to be very careful – I wouldn’t want to be the Frenchman who made Covent Garden fall down.’ The project will run from 27 August to 27 September.
