Five people have been reported dead after two attacks in the capital city of Tajikistan, Dushanbe, on Friday. The first attack happened just east of the city, when a small armed gang attacked a police station, but no deaths were reported.

The second attack, in which three police officers died, occurred near the city’s international airport. The gang’s leader and one of the other attackers were also killed by security forces. The motive for the attacks is as yet unclear, though there are sometimes clashes along Tajikistan’s border with Kyrgyzstan, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises against all but essential travel to the eastern Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast, which borders China.
