Traditional celebrations of Epiphany (6 January) in Greece involve the custom of diving for the holy cross. Across the country, Orthodox priests throw the cross into the sea, a lake or a river, and local men and boys dive in and swim to retrieve it. This year, the celebration in Amari near Rethymno on the island of Crete features Sifis, the famous local crocodile and a tourist attraction ever since it was spotted in July 2014.
