A leading Norwegian environmentalist has warned that the country is at risk of a 'Chernobyl in slow motion' because of derelict Soviet nuclear subs wrecked close to Norway's northern borders. Nils Bøhmer says that vast quantities of nuclear waste dumped in the Barents and Kara Seas by the Soviet Union before its dissolution pose a huge threat to the environment, and could start to leak in ten to fifteen years. Plans to recover and dispose of the nuclear waste safely have halted since relations between Russia and the West have deteriorated in recent months. Read more: thelocal.no
