Mermaid enthusiasts are organising a petition after the city of Edmonton banned the use of monofins, which mimic the tails of the mythical sea nymphs, in city pools. The city says the tails ‘promote holding one's breath...for long periods of time and can lead to blackouts and drowning’. Children are especially at risk, critics say. But advocates for the tails argue that there’s nothing about the tails that suggest an inherent danger to kids if properly supervised. Instead the tails promote fun and exercise in swimming pools.
