Parasites resistant to artemisinin, a drug used to treat malaria, have been detected in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar (Burma), and are on the verge of spreading into India, according to the latest medical research. In Myanmar, tests across 55 sites have shown that resistance to the drug is widespread in that country. Director of the Worldwide Antimalarial Resistance Network, Professor Philippe Guerin, has described the spread of artemisinin resistance as ‘alarming’. Read more: bbc.com
