A life-size replica of the Great Sphinx has been photographed being torn down in eastern China.

The sphinx was a copy of the Egyptian monument built by a movie studio near Shijiazhuang in Hebei province. It was photographed halfway disassembled under scaffolding and sheet metal, purportedly after the Egyptian Ministry of State Antiquities filed a complaint with Unesco. The film set is well-known for its replica buildings: elsewhere on the site are mock versions of the US Capitol, London’s Big Ben clock tower and the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.
