A heatwave has struck China, causing temperatures in northern and central parts of the country to soar well above 40°C.

A yellow alert – the country’s second highest weather alert – was issued on Monday after temperatures in Beijing reached 42°C. People have been advised to stay indoors, especially during peak afternoon heat hours, as several people have been affected, including one man who died of heatstroke after standing in line at a railway station.
