The Indian city of Chennai is set to ban plastic bags from 15 August in a bid to reduce the 429 tonnes of plastic rubbish produced by the city every day.

The state capital of Tamil Nadu is second only to Delhi in the amount of waste that it produces, and officials are considering extending the ban to styrofoam and polystyrene cups and plates, aluminium plates and polypropylene packaging. However, some local commentators have questioned how the ban will be enforced in a city where other environmental laws are routinely flouted. Read more: timesofindia.com
