An Italian couple who had decided to escape modern life by living in the wild were discovered this week living under an overhanging rock halfway up a mountain.
The 50-year-old man and 24-year-old woman left their homes in Trieste in the spring and headed for a nearby mountain range on the border with Slovenia. They survived in the wild for six months, eating berries and using a small fire to stay warm, but forest rangers became worried about the ‘strange couple’ rumoured to be living on the mountain and decided to investigate. They found the couple ‘healthy and in good spirits’, though ‘a bit cold and hungry’ and persuaded them to rejoin civilisation, at least for the winter, with an offer of accommodation in a local barracks.
