Police in India are to be armed with catapults in the search for new ways to deal with violent protesters.
At a training camp in Haryana, close to the capital New Delhi, officers are being trained to use catapults and chilli balls to disperse violent crowds, in place of guns and charges with lathis (batons). Protests and demonstrations often develop into riots in India, and deaths are tragically common. The hope is that replacing firearms with non-lethal weapons will reduce the casualty rate as the police deal with challenges ranging from intercommunal violence to crowd surges at religious festivals.
