A mutilated toucan that was resuced from a wildlife animal fair in Rio de Janeiro has been fitted with a prosthetic beak made with a 3D printer.

It is unclear whether the female bird, named Tieta, lost the upper part of her beak after being abused by animal smugglers or during a fight with the larger toucan she was locked up with inside a box. The prosthetic beak project was coordinated by wildlife management group Instituto Vida Livre and three Brazilian universities. The plastic beak is covered with nail polish and sealed with a polymer made from a castor oil plant. Read more: bbc.com
