The government of Bhutan is facing a public rebellion over plans to introduce meat-processing plants, after widespread opposition from local Buddhists. Although many Bhutanese eat meat from animals that have been killed elsewhere, the idea of slaughtering animals for food inside Bhutan is taboo, and many Buddhists fear that the processing plants are a stepping stone towards the industrial slaughter of livestock. ‘The reality is that people are against slaughterhouses, but they love meat and this is where the problem lies,’ said home minister Damcho Dorji.
