New regulations mean heavy packers may have added costs when travelling with Amtrak in the USA. On 1 October, the national passenger rail service put new regulations into effect that limit the amount of luggage each passenger can bring on board without incurring extra costs.

However, according to the Amtrak website, each passenger may still bring a total of 150 lbs. (70 kg) of luggage. The rules allow for two personal items weighing 25 lbs. (12 kg) each , as well as two carry-on items weighing 50 lbs. (23 kg).

A fee of $20 USD will be charged for each carry-on or personal item that goes beyond the limits. There is also a maximum of two excess bags permitted per passenger.

Those travelling with kids under two-years-old can bring on an additional item, such as a stroller or diaper bag, which does not count towards their limit.

Amtrak officials say the move is not about making money, but rather is needed to preserve space and reduce safety concerns, reports CNN.
