The canteen at the government of Kerala offices in New Delhi has been raided by Hindu hardliners after rumours that beef was being served inside.

A team of policemen searched the canteen after a tip-off from a religious group, but found that the restaurant was only serving buffalo meat, which is not subject to the same religious proscription. The consumption of beef has become a major political and social issue in India, with some states banning beef entirely, and a number of incidents of violence against people accused of eating beef, including the lynching of a Muslim man in Uttar Pradesh in early October.
