A Kiwi vigilante took the keys from a rental car being driven by an Australian tourist with whom he had narrowly avoided a head-on collision. The vigilante left the group on the remote Lindis Pass in Central Otago. On returning to cell phone range he rang the police who collected the group but also fined the Australian driver $1000 for the careless operation of a vehicle. New Zealand has made road safety and foreign drivers a major focus of their tourism information this year due to the high number of accidents involving drivers on holiday in the country.
