The Australian Government is investigating trialling a new cloud-based passport system that would allow Australians to travel without a physical passport between Australia and New Zealand.
Australians and New Zealanders can live in each other’s countries freely, however they still require a passport to move between the two neighbouring nations. The idea for a cloud passport came out of a start-up ‘ideas challenge’ by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Since 2005, Australia’s ePassports have contained a microchip that stores the holder’s personal data and a digital image allowing passengers to move through automated border checks.
