The last time the world’s press erupted to a trophy hunter killing an iconic wild animal was in July this year, when an American dentist illegally took down Cecil the lion near Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park.

A similar furore looks set to break out after The Telegraph released images of a German hunter standing proudly in front of what is the largest elephant killed in the past 30 years. The unnamed hunter paid US$60,000 for his three-week Big Five hunt in Zimbabwe, which appears to have been conducted legally. The elephant, whose tusks weighed a combined 120lbs, was shot in a private concession on the border of the Gonarezhou National Park.
