The ruins of an ancient mosque have been discovered at a building site on the southern Maldivian island of Thinadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.

The engraved limestone walls were uncovered as builders prepared the foundations for a new Islamic Centre, and the discovery of human remains may force the builders to rethink their plans because of the Islamic proscription on building places of worship over funeral grounds. Thinadhoo was forceably depopulated in 1962 following a short-lived secessionist uprising against the rule of former president Nasir, but the island is being redeveloped as a regional capital.
