A new night tour will let you explore Rome’s iconic Colosseum after dark

The Colosseum is spectacular to see at any time, but a new night tour will allow you to explore the iconic Roman landmark after dark. The incredible amphitheatre may be even more mesmerising by night, with the dark sky and city lights illuminating the majestic atmosphere of the ancient structure.

The Under the Moon tour has been launched by Italy tour experts, Roma Experience, and it also offers participants access to restricted areas of the Colosseum. This includes the arena stage and the underground dungeons, which it is not possible to visit during the day. The Colosseum averages around four million visitors every year, but this VIP tour is limited to just 25 participants, meaning that you can enjoy your visit free from crowds.

The tour begins by Piazza Venezia where you will be given an overview of Ancient’s Rome’s imperial history, and see city sights that include the Piazza Venezia square, the Roman Forum, Capitoline Hill and Via dei Fori Imperiali. Upon arrival at the Colosseum, you will be taken to the arena’s main wooden stage, offering a gladiator’s view of the arena.

From the arena, you will move on to the Colosseum’s underground dungeons where animals and gladiators awaited their turn to fight during Ancient Roman times, locked in cages. You’ll see a reconstructed “trap door” and wooden elevator that was used to raise them from the underground area up to the main arena.
