There’s nothing like taking to the beach for a dose of surf, sand and sea to help rejuvenate the spirit. Over the years, excited travellers have sought out the best surf spots in every corner of the world, taking the time to appreciate each unique destination for what it can offer. And now, Airbnb is riding the proverbial wave, having just announced a partnership with the World Surf League that sees them working together to offer new experiences in some of the top surfing destinations all over the world.

Airbnb first partnered with the World Surf League back in 2016, offering curated home options to travellers in a diverse range of top surf spots. Now, the partnership has expanded to include unique and local surf experiences, allowing travellers to choose from over 75 exciting experiences hosted by surf professionals, certified coaches and influencers in different places. Surfing experiences include lessons at Edouard and Antoine Delpero Surf School in Biarritz, France, coaching with Leo Neves in Saquarema, Brazil, a learn to shape workshop in Hawaii, where visitors can cut foam and discover the process of building a board, as well as a visit to Phillip Island in Australia with Girls on Board Surf School.

“Surfing is one of the top things people want to do when they travel, but many are scared to try at first. No matter your level, these ‘experiences’ provide a more intimate, personal and welcoming experience than you’d get otherwise, and a chance for local surf communities to earn extra income doing what they love,” said Airbnb Co-Founder Brian Chesky.

Since it first began offering experiences, surfing has proven to be one of the most popular activities on Airbnb. In 2017, there were 170,000 guest arrivals at homes on Airbnb in select surfing communities worldwide, from Pupukea, Hawaii to Mundaka, Spain and Jeffrey’s Bay in South Africa. Of all the bookings, the MySurf School Experience in Bali has ranked in the top three most-booked globally, and to date, hosts in surfing communities on the World Surf League tournament circuit have earned over $23 million collectively by sharing their homes and passions.
