Don’t put off booking that holiday you dream of or that road trip you’d like to take, as new research has revealed that 71% of global travellers have regrets over their missed travel opportunities. This seems to particularly apply to younger generations, as 82% of the 18 to 24-year-olds surveyed, or Generation Z, regret losing out on chances to travel.
The findings revealed that the biggest missed travel opportunities include not travelling more often (46%), not travelling more when younger (35%), not seeing more of the countries visited (29%), not going to more far-flung destinations (25%), not embarking on more adventurous travel (25%) and not going to more remote destinations (25%).
However, regrets are a lot higher amongst Generation Z with 35% of this age group regretting not being more adventurous and 29% regretting not going to more far-flung destinations. It’s also no surprise that 32% of group nicknamed the “selfie generation” found it upsetting when they failed to capture more photos to commemorate their trip, compared with only 23% for overall travellers.
Happily, despite their sense of regret, 53% of all travellers have overcome their worries about travelling to a new destination. These worries were around perceived barriers around language, expense, directions and safety in the unknown. Generation Z were found to be the most willing to face their travel anxieties head on, with 61% overcoming their concerns.
Travel can be transformative and life-enhancing for all generations, with 19% of travellers saying they found their purpose or passion in life when travelling, 17% overcoming a major fear and 15% learning a new language. For 55% of travellers, going on holiday has inspired significant life changes, rising to 71% of 18 to 24-year-olds.
Travelling can also be physically and mentally beneficial, with 46% of travellers saying it had a positive effect on their mental health, and inspiring 26% to improve their physical health. In addition, 17% of people have overcome a major fear and 15% learnt a new language. Travelling was found to deepen existing relationships and create new ones, with 30% of travellers becoming closer to their family and 27% making new long-lasting friendships while on holiday.
