Would you use a 'grocery guru' on vacation to help make healthier choices?

Scheduling some personal time to unwind at a spa can be the perfect way to switch gears and relax. But at one Miami resort, the offerings don’t stop at the usual massages, facials and pedicures, as guests have the opportunity to meet with an in-house “grocery guru” who will help them make healthier choices when it comes to shopping.

Located along the white sand shores of Miami Beach, Carillon Miami Wellness Resort aims at delivering unique luxury travel and wellness experiences to guests. As well as being home to the largest spa in the region (measuring 70,000 square-feet), the resort boasts a range of recreational activities and facilities, including over 200 fitness classes each week, a two-storey indoor rock wall and four pools, while it also offers a range of courses designed to better the mind and body.

The resort also offers a number of other in depth courses on nutrition for health and wellness.

With the grocery guru experience, registered dietitian and personal trainer Monika Arenas talks guests through their usual routines when it comes to grocery shopping, outlining how they can avoid making unhealthy choices and offering tips on how to better prepare healthy, well-balanced meals. The process also teaches guests how to do price comparisons, find nutritional snack options, as well as good quality meats and fish. “Guests truly enjoy the informative sessions with Monika, as she provides tips and tricks that can be used in their daily lives back home and on the road. The experience is an extension of Carillon’s commitment to guests’ long-term wellness goals, and the resort wanted to implement a service that will teach guests how to make mindful changes,” a representative of Carillon Miami Wellness Resort told Lonely Planet Travel News.

The grocery guru experience lasts 90 minutes and costs $295 (€246). The resort also offers a nutrition for life course (60 minutes $175 and 90 minutes $260), educating guests on the healthier diets for weight loss or weight gain, fitness and energy and digestive wellness, as well as a kitchen pantry make-over that sees an in-house dietitian going through the common products that guests store at home while giving tips on which ones are worth keeping or worth swapping.
