If the idea of being connected to the internet during a flight fills you with joy, you’ll be happy to learn that Virgin Atlantic is now offering Wi-Fi across its entire fleet.
It announced the news using a very funny video that featured many social media phenomena that went viral in recent times, including memes, videos and crazes that captured public imagination. These include the mannequin challenge, whether that dress was blue and black or cream and gold, the sneezing baby panda and the “Alan, Alan, Alan” talking marmot.
The carrier claims to be the first in Europe to offer the service, which will cost between £2.99 and £14.99, depending on the journey and package purchased. It says that 42% of customers opt for the maximum package, which lasts the entire flight. So if you’re just getting to a good bit in your eBook or have emails you need to urgently send, you can connect at 10,000 feet and above. Bear in mind though that like all flights, the cabin crew may ask you to switch off all electronic devices at certain times.
Virgin is using technology from Panasonic on its Boeing 787s and technology from Gogo on its Airbus craft and Boeing 747s. It says that it has been a challenge to find reliable connections over vast expanses of ocean, such as the Atlantic, because the signal can’t come from the ground, and has to be transmitted from satellites. It has found that the most popular routes for Wi-Fi use are London Heathrow to New York JFK, and San Francisco and Atlanta.
