A brand new time-lapse video has been released that depicts a warm sunset and whirling star trails over Carhenge in Nebraska, as well as the incredible recent total eclipse.
Called Stormhenge, the video is part of Skyglow, an ongoing multi-media project that aims to highlight the very best night skies in North America while hoping to raise awareness of the increased impact that light pollution has on the natural environment. It was captured at Carhenge, a replica of England’s famous Stonehenge made entirely of abandoned automobiles that was built in 1987. The video is the result of four separate shoots at the location between 2015 and 2017, culminating in the total solar eclipse that occurred this week.
The video encapsulates a range of weather conditions and natural sights, featuring lightening, fog, rain, star trails and the milky way all captured above the distinctive skeletons of stacked cars. “We’ve been going across America looking for the best dark sky locations and when we heard about Carhenge, it sounded like something too crazy to possibly be real. With the combination of a great night sky area and an amazing foreground, we couldn’t possibly pass it up. We wanted to really show all the different facets of the location and really bring out the mythical quality to this uniquely American landmark,” said Gavin Heffernan of Skyglow.
The video marks the completion of the Skyglow project, which began as a Kickstarter campaign conceived by filmmakers Gavin Heffernan and Harun Mehmedinović. It has been released as a 192-page hardcover photobook and time-lapse video series, along with a blend of stories, essays and anecdotal captions. The concept proved extremely popular, and became the fourth highest-earning photobook campaign in the history of Kickstarter.
The project saw Gavin and Harun travelling over 150,000 miles over a three-year period, capturing over 500,000 photos. Other phenomena featured in the series includes Alberta’s Northern Lights and the Kīlauea volcano in Hawaii.
