Prepare for a new season of Stranger Things at a pop-up bar in Chicago

The world is hyped up for season 2 of Stranger Things but if you simply can’t wait until 27 October for the next instalment of the 80s-inspired science fiction hit, Chicago’s latest pop-up bar is for you.

Called The Upside Down, it will run until at least September, although there may be plans to bring it into the Halloween season, providing your fix right until the new season drops. The bar will be full of incredible attention to detail to bring in different elements of the show. Their signature cocktail is ‘Eleven’s Eggos’, a bourbon-based frozen slushie with maple syrup, garnished with a toasted Eggo waffle.

For something a little less sweet, there are two exclusive craft beers on tap called ‘Survive’ and ‘Friends Don’t Lie’ and, with your drink in hand, you can try your luck at the ‘What About Barb?!’ upside-down slot machine. The entire experience will, of course, be soundtracked by a perfectly retro 80’s playlist.

This latest concept pop-up bar is by Emporium Popups and director Jared Saul spoke to Lonely Planet about his excitement about bringing the Netflix show to life. I was a fan from the first moment I saw it”, he said. “The story, the cast, the throwback vibes of my childhood, & the incredible soundtrack & score. It’s all so great & to be able to translate that into a bar concept is amazing.”

There are also plenty of Instagrammable corners of the bar, including the light-up wall that Will uses to send messages to his mother and the Castle Byers fort. So far, Jared said the response has been incredible. “People are ecstatic about the project, including my staff”, he said.

“The first weekend was so much fun! Everybody we met & talked to had such a great energy & such an amazing affection for the show, it was really inspiring to us all. We couldn’t be happier & we’re so very much looking forward to meeting more Stranger Things fans as the project rolls on!”

The Upside Down is open to the public Wednesday to Sunday in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago and you can followed the bar’s Instagram account for updates on opening times and dates.
