'Oktoberfest' comes to London with break-dancers, Hasselhoff karaoke and bratwurst-eating challenges

We all love Oktoberfest, the world’s largest beer and folk festival held annually in Munich, and now a venue in East London is hosting a version of its own. Shoreditch Oktoberfest will run on several dates in September and October, and it comes complete with such delights as German break-dancers and bratwurst-eating challenges. The organisers recommend grabbing your lederhosen and coming along to enjoy a stein of beer.

Positioning itself as the “anti-Oktoberfest,” it promises to be an alternative take on the traditional Bavarian beer festival. The organisers claim that the venue will be transformed into a “twisted den of hedonism along the lines of Oktoberfest meeting the Rio Carnival.” The festival will be full of games for grown-ups, live entertainment, crowd-interaction and challenges. To enhance the surroundings, an array of custom-made décor, cutting-edge production and alpine backdrops will make it a spectacular, fully-immersive experience.

Entertainment comes in the form of a troupe of Bavarian break-dancers, street magicians, DJs and David Hasselhoff-themed karaoke sessions. Those attending the festival should not expect to sip on their beer for the evening and chat quietly to pals, as attendees will most likely find themselves up on their feet, dancing and participating in competitions. Traditionalists will also be catered for with elements like a live Bavarian oompah band, but they’ll be playing hits deemed appropriate for the ethos of Shoreditch Oktoberfest.

On the food and drink front, there’ll be a selection of traditional Oktoberfest bier, bratwurst stewed with sauerkraut and wiener schnitzel to enjoy. Shoreditch Oktoberfest takes over place on various dates between 22 September and 6 October at the venue, Last Days of Shoreditch, in the heart of East London.
