If you have ever fancied taking part in the fun celebrity races that Jimmy Fallon hosts on NBC’s The Tonight Show, we might be able to point you in the direction of the next best thing. Universal Studios in Florida has introduced a new attraction called “Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon,” in which the audience gets to enjoy a simulation of a high-speed trip through NYC.
During the ride, Jimmy challenges the 72-strong audience to a race throughout the Big Apple and beyond, and the effect is achieved by the use of motion simulator technology and 3D large screen media. He sets the participants up for the race, and his house band, the Roots, raps the safety precautions. The action is set in a theatre that looks like NBC’s Studio 6B, and the audience wears 3D glasses and safety belts as they take a virtual flight above New York. Jimmy plays several characters throughout the experience to entertain the riders, and he rides along in a car called Tonight Rider.
To book the ride, visitors need to make a reservation using Universal’s app or kiosks adjacent to the attraction. Once inside, they can watch interactive displays with clips from The Tonight Show, sprawl out on various couches or send Jimmy Fallon-type thank you notes.
As well as the ride itself, the attraction also houses a museum of memorabilia that honours the show, including tributes to previous hosts, Steve Allen, Johnny Carson, Jack Paar, Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien. It also gives people a fun approximation of what it’s like to visit 30 Rock and attend a taping of the show. The show’s dancing star, Hashtag the Panda, mingles with the visitors, and they’re treated to live performances by the Ragtime Gals.
