A brand new scooter rental programme has been unveiled in Rome, which is good news for visitors who wish to get around the Italian capital quickly. A fleet of 240 eco-friendly electric scooters have been made available for locals and visitors to use, and the plan is to increase the number next year.
The scheme was announced by Rome transport councillor, Linda Mele, as part of the council’s efforts to improve transport options and make the capital more eco-friendly. The eCooltra scooters are also available in Barcelona, Madrid and Lisbon, and are utilised through an app.
Users locate and book the nearest available vehicle through the eCooltra app on their phones. It costs 24 cent-per-minute to hire the scooter, which comes complete with two helmets in size M and L.
The electric scooters are easy to use as they operate through a start/stop button. You are insured during your ride, and there is no danger of conking out as the battery is always fully charged. As an added bonus, the scooter comes with two USB ports to charge your mobile phone while you’re on board.
The city council is hoping that this new scheme will be a hit as its previous bike-sharing schemes were unsuccessful for a variety of reasons, including bicycle theft.
