Activity enthusiasts will be delighted to learn that the largest outdoor climbing gym in North America is returning to Brooklyn Bridge Park. Known as Dumbo Boulders, the blue 7800-square-foot gym will open to the public this Saturday, 15 April.
The gym made its debut last year thanks to local rock climbing company, The Cliffs, and it operated in the park for a year on an interim basis. It was a great success, and now, with a new five-year licence under its belt, it will officially reopen for business.
The frame holds 250 climbers at a time and more than 26000 climbers enjoyed the experience of climbing on it last year. A day pass costs $9, which includes rock climbing shoe rentals. Climbers don’t need to wear a harness though, as the walls are relatively short and the floor is made of compacted rubber mulch to cushion any falls. Once they’re at the top, climbers are treated to a scenic view of New York’s skyline
While 15 April is a “soft opening, to celebrate the gym’s reprise, Dumbo Boulders will host a grand reopening day on 6 May. This fun-filled day will include instructional clinics, family-friendly programming and a bouldering challenge. The gym will remain open seven days per week, operating from noon to 8pm on weekdays and 9am to 8pm on weekends.
Further information about the gym’s events and key dates is available on its website.
