Emirates airline has announced a free service to help passengers who want to use their laptops to get work done, in light of the recent ban. The move comes after US authorities told airlines from eight countries to forbid passengers from carrying laptops or electronic devices bigger than smartphones on board their aircraft on flights into the US.
Emirates’ new service means that passengers won’t have to place their devices in their checked baggage. They can use their laptops and tablets until right before they board, and then the airline will collect them when it’s time to board, pack them in a box, and store them in the cargo hold. Once in the US, the devices will be returned to the passengers.
Emirates also tweeted a jokey video featuring a clip from their ad with Jennifer Aniston, in which they said that their in-flight entertainment system was so good it would make up to passengers for the laptop ban. “Perhaps the silver lining to this is that they can now justifiably give themselves a break from their devices, enjoy our onboard service and catch up on the latest movies, music, and TV box sets that we have on offer,” said Sir Tim Clark, president of Emirates Airline.

He said that the new service aims to ensure compliance with the new rules, while minimising disruption to passenger flow and impact on customer experience. “Our new complimentary service enables passengers, particularly those flying for business, to have the flexibility to use their devices until the last possible moment,” he added.
