If you want to kick-start your spring with a glimpse of some gorgeous wildflowers, some parts of California are set to see an impressive ‘super bloom’.
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park has already begun to see signs of an incredible spring bloom – one that local park officials say could be the biggest in 20 years, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. A downpour of winter rains has meant that flowers like desert lilies, sunflowers, lavender and more have begun to open up. But, the rains that brought the flowers to life could be followed by winds, caterpillars and heat that could lead to a short-lived bloom.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park posted on its Facebook page on 4 March, noting that it is set to be a great year for wildflowers. While the blooms are not at their peak, “desert lilies are spectacular, and other annuals are coming along nicely”. The park even began advising people to start planning for a visit near the middle of the month in order to make the most of the bloom.
Naturally, there’s expected to be large crowds visiting to enjoy all the signs of spring. The massive park covers roughly 640,000 acres, and is the largest US state park outside of Alaska. It is home to more than 92 different plant families and hundreds of flowering species of plants. If you want to keep up-to-date on the status of wildflowers in the park, you can call the Theodore Payne Wild Flower Hotline. The hotline provides a weekly report on the flowers’ status – recorded by Emmy Award-winning actor Joe Spano, of NCIS fame. The number is 818 768-1802, ext. 7.

Other regions of the state are also seeing their spring flowers start to open, such as Joshua Tree National Park, which has said that its famed trees and some wildflowers are already beginning to bloom. The park is also posting updates on what flowers are in bloom and where to find them here. Read more about how to see the best of California’s deserts here.
