A 19th-century warehouse becomes a new hotel with a rooftop infinity pool in Singapore

A ‘godown’, or warehouse, that was built in 1895 and once housed a popular disco has become a new boutique hotel in Singapore.

The Warehouse Hotel is located on the Singapore River, where the original structure was built as part of the Straits of Malacca trade route. According to the Singapore-based hospitality group The Lo & Behold Group, “at that time, the area was a hotbed of secret societies, underground activity, and liquor distilleries” with the warehouse placed in the middle of the “veritable red light district of its time”. While much of the seedier history has disappeared from the neighbourhood of Robinson Quay, the new hotel is a 37-room building focused on heritage and local culture.

The hotel, which opened in January, has a unique triple-pitched roof and original masonry walls from its original use, with the hotel rooms created to fit the unique layout. The rooftop also features an infinity pool that overlooks the river, so visitors can get a relaxing view of the urban landscape while they swim above.

The industrial feel of the space is designed to reflect the building’s start as a ‘godown’ during the height of Singapore’s spice trade.

Naturally, as it stands at the former centre of where many people were making homemade spirits, the lobby bar features cocktails with house-made alcohol infusions and essences. The drinks are designed to reflect the hotel’s past, giving visitors “a taste of the spice trade, drink up the underbelly of illegal distilleries, and finally soak in the heady 80s – when the building housed Singapore’s most renowned disco of the era”.
