Westminster Council has given approval for the 730-square-metre green oasis in the English capital, which will feature open lawns and colourful Tibetan cherry trees. Its raised flower borders will contain flora to complement the different seasons, including spring bulbs, stem colour in autumn and scented winter flowers.

The floating park will have seating and free Wi-Fi to encourage local workers to spend time there, and there will be a mooring for boat-based traders to sell food and drink. Visitors will be permitted to cool off by dangling their feet in the canal waters, and can gaze upon programmable water features and a light maze. Dubbed a ‘pocket park,’ it will be open all year round until dusk. It will also feature an events and installations venue with a pergola and small floating reserve for wildfowl.

The project is being led by former Royal Horticultural Society Young Garden Designer of the Year, Tony Woods. It will be created from a series of interlocking pontoons made from recycled materials that will be made to look like reclaimed wood. The ‘London Floating Pocket Park’ is part of the development of Merchant Square by property company European Land. It is due to open in May as part of the Chelsea Fringe, just in time for visitors to enjoy it over the summer months.
