This small Australian town is hoping to lure travellers to a garlic-themed festival

There probably won’t be much kissing at it, but a small Australian town is hoping to lure travellers to a garlic-themed festival next month. Residents of Meeniyan in South Gippsland are hosting the Meeniyan Garlic Festival on 18 February, where the strongly-flavoured, but popular, member of the onion family will be the star attraction.

Organisers claim that the event is the first garlic festival in Victoria. Local growers will sell their bulbs to attendees, who can learn from the experts at the Garlic Institute about the 300 varieties of garlic.

There will be 60 stalls from local food producers, who will sell everything from garlic-flavoured calamari, fries, scones and ice-cream. There’ll even be garlic beer!

Entertainment on the day will include artists and bands, and attendees can visit the Festival Kitchen for cooking demonstrations. There will even be workshops where they can learn to make their own garlic plait.

Kirsten Jones is the garlic farmer who came up with the idea for the Meeniyan Garlic Festival, and she believes that it will attract 6000 visitors. If it’s a success, locals hope that it will establish Meeniyan as a high-end quality foodie destination.
