Trainspotting’s sequel will have its world premiere in Edinburgh

Edinburgh will host the world premiere of T2 Trainspotting, the sequel to the 1996 film that defined an era and made Ewan McGregor a star. According to the BBC, the screening will be at the Cineworld in Fountain Park and the film’s cast are all expected to attend.

Actors Ewan McGregor and Ewan Bremner run on the set of the Trainspotting film sequel on Princess Street on July 13, 2016 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The long awaited Trainspotting 2 is being filmed in Edinburgh and Glasgow, 20 years after the original was released and it will also see the cast from the first film returning including Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle.

McGregor returns to play Mark Renton, alongside fellow actors Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle, Kelly MacDonald,  Ewen Bremner and director Danny Boyle. In the 21 years since the first movie, the cast have starred in films as diverse as Gosford Park and Black Hawk Down, as well as James Bond and Harry Potter movies. Boyle directed the acclaimed opening ceremony to the 2012 London Olympics.

Both Trainspotting and T2 are based on books by the writer Irvine Welsh, with T2 adapted from the 2002 novel Porno. The action sees Renton, who had fled to Amsterdam with the profits of a drug deal,  meet up with his old gang and attempt to avoid the violent Francis Begbie, played by Carlyle, who has been released from prison.

Trainspotting is set mostly in Edinburgh, although locations in Glasgow were also used for the film. The opening shot featured a sprint down Edinburgh’s iconic Princes St, and it seems a similar sequence will feature in the sequel. McGregor and Bremner were spotted being filmed running out of an Urban Outfitters on the street in July.

While Scotland’s capital of Edinburgh has a genteel reputation, Trainspotting revealed a grimy underbelly of drink, drugs and crime, focusing on Leith, the port on the north side of the city. Parts of Leith have gentrified in the ensuing years, and it’s now one of the most trendy parts of the city for eating and nightlife.

But, 21 years on from the first film, it seems like T2 follows similar themes – consumerism, drugs, pornography and violence all feature in the trailer. The soundtrack for Trainspotting was hugely influential, giving Iggy Pop’s career a major boost and propelling Underworld into the charts. The latter band’s song ‘Born Slippy’ will return in T2, along with ‘Silk’ by indie rockers Wolf Alice.
