The paintings of actor Sir Anthony Hopkins go on display in Las Vegas and San Diego

The colourful paintings of Silence of the Lambs actor Sir Anthony Hopkins have gone on display in Las Vegas and San Diego.

Sir Anthony, who is 79, began painting 12 years ago, encouraged by his wife Stella.

Now his art has become part of the permanent exhibitions at Jeff Mitchum Galleries at Bellagio and MGM Grand on on the Las Vegas Strip and also in La Jolla in San Diego.

 

The acrylic paintings on canvas are generally priced between $4000 and $80,000 and are selling well.

When asked about his inspiration, Anthony says that he doesn’t think there’s any meaning in it.

“I just paint,” he says. “I discover as I go along and I don’t analyze, I just go for it. The way my mind is constructed, I like to do things fast and multitask.”

Anthony works from a studio filled with paints, oils, acrylics, tempera bottles, pens, markers, brushes and canvases.

His interest in colourful art was sparked as a child when his father took him into a church and he saw the stained glass windows.

“Coming to California I was attracted by all the colour here,” he says. “You know, we’re not here for long, so I wanted to express colour while I could.”

“It’s something that I am proud of because I want to do everything I can,” the Westworld actor adds. “Time is running out.”

“I used to take myself so seriously, but now I don’t. I allow myself to revel in the exhilarating nature of it all, maybe reaching for the divine.”
