Want to travel and save money in 2017? Consider taking a year-long cruise

It’s a new year and that means it’s time for new travel plans. But if the exorbitant cost of living in your city looks like it may eat into your 2017 travel budget, why not consider spending the year at sea?

If you live in one of the world’s more expensive cities, it could be much cheaper to take a year-long cruise than stay at home, according to the UK-based cruise travel agency, Planet CruiseThe company has planned a year-long itinerary that it says is more cost-effective than living in places like New York, London, Dubai and Sydney – saving those city-dwellers an average of £2656 a year by living at sea for 12 months instead.

The 52-week voyage will take travellers to the seas until 5 January 2018. The year of travel, which would be a series of different cruises, would cost about £24,000, which would include food, entertainment and accommodation for 2017, which the company compared to the average cost of living in 10 of the world’s most famous cities.

Planet Cruise compared the amenities passengers get on board ship against what they would save on things like rent, food, commuting costs and utility bills. According to the company, folks in London would save £5712, residents of Hong Kong could save £4980, people in Singapore could save £2240, and people in Zurich could save £4956. The trip would take passengers to stops in the Caribbean, South America, Europe, North America and more.

Naturally, the plan isn’t practical for people with a job – most travellers would still need to earn money during the year in order to actually afford to take a year-long trip. But, if cruising is your style, it could be time to consider becoming a digital nomad in order to make it happen.
